Donations boost rebuilding efforts

THERE were plenty of familiar Warwick faces at the Australian Masters Men's Hockey Championships late last month in Canberra when donations of $21,053.91 were presented to Warwick Hockey Association officials.

After being devastated by the flood which destroyed its synthetic surface nine months ago, the Warwick association received $10,000 from Australian Masters men's president David Peebles at the nationals in Canberra.

The association also received $6053.91 from the Sunshine Coast Association, half of the profit from the Queensland over 40/50 years men's carnival which was moved from Warwick to the Sunshine Coast due to the flood.

The Queensland Masters Association also donated $5000 to Warwick hockey.

Association treasurer Sam Farrell said the $21,053.91 received in the past fortnight would help re-build club facilities.

As well as current Warwick players Dion Phillips and Steve Farrell, former Warwick players Scott Reid (now Mackay), Brian Blacka (Ipswich), John Lamb (Sunshine Coast), Simon Carrie and George Goodsell (Toowoomba), Craig Mathison (Gladstone) and Brett Jennings (Brisbane) played in the masters.

Warwick officials Sam Farrell, Sheryl Windle and Greg McDonald were at the carnival along with former Warwick player Wendy Lamb (Sunshine Coast) when the donations were presented at the Queensland dinner.

Warwick player Rob Pohlman was selected in the over 55s Maroons team but withdrew.

Phillips and Reid won gold in the over 35s while Steve Farrell and Carrie were in the third-placed Maroons in the over 50s. John Lamb won gold in over 45s. His wife Wendy was team manager.
