Professional squash player back in Yamba, loving the surf

DONNA Urquhart travels the world playing professional squash, but she says after months away from her home-town of Yamba, she craves to be in her own surf break.

"I start dreaming about it," she said.

"It's a funny thing, but I really miss it, to be able to come home, go out into the ocean and get a refresh."

And a quick look at her Instagram account mirrors this statement, with blue-soaked pictures of the Yamba beaches interspersed with her in action all over the world.

"I've surfed since I was a young teenager, before that dad pushed me into a few waves, but when I was a teenager I was hooked," she said.

"I remember that every day before and after school we'd be out there surfing."

And it is the family connection that is an important part of Donna's love of the beach and surfing.

"My older brother taught me how to surf," she said.

"He was always surfing and I always wanted to be as good as him.

"It's always something I could do with with my brothers and my family."

Growing up within walking distance of Yamba's main beach, Donna says it is that access she misses.

"Now I live a long way from home, I appreciate how good we had it as kids," she said.

"I really miss it, how close we were, and the good surfing waves.

"When I was back in July, I remember a few sessions out at Flat Rock where it was just me, my brothers, a couple of best mates and some dolphins. There was a bit of an offshore and the waves were just perfect. We'd take turn catching waves and cheering each other on. It was the best feeling."

And while Donna is among the world's best at squash, she says she's not quite ready to trade the racquet for a surfboard any time soon.

"I think I'll stick to playing squash," she laughed.

"I surf well enough just to enjoy it."
