OPINION: Don’t slash our parks

THE council has some hard decisions to make in coming months, with a tough budget likely to be handed down for the region this year.

It is almost inevitable ratepayers will be dealt the blow of another significant rate rise and our region's parks are also in the firing line.

While it is important the council takes a hard look at finance to see where savings can be made, it would be disappointing to see services and assets slashed.

BUDGET TO GO BACK TO BASICS

The council certainly has a responsibility to provide basic services but the needs from its people are far beyond water and rubbish collection.

A large number of the region's parks could be put under the hammer as council looks to make a quick buck and take a short breather from financial pressures.

Despite the fact some of these parks are not frequently used, they must never be sold in desperation.

Sprawling and luscious parkland at our fingertips is of huge benefit and value to our region - let's hope the council agrees.
