Double for bull rider at rodeos
KYOGLE cowboy David Kennedy has become only the second cowboy to win the Warwick/Mt Isa double in bull riding.
Kennedy scored 86 in round 1 to lead the Fonterra Open Bull Ride and then scored 76 in the final to take the early lead.
Oxley (Victoria) cowboy Brad Pierce scored 77 in round 1 and 82 in the final to move into second place.
Of the 10 cowboys in the final, only two rode time.
Beaudesert rider Jarod Borghero was third going into the final so finished third overall.
Kennedy said he was happy to draw a good bull in the first round to take the lead.
"I knew if I rode my second bull, I was a good chance of the money but you have to ride 100% all the time and not just think about making time," Kennedy said.
"The field in the final of the bull ride was pretty much the best in the event."
Before this weekend, Kennedy's best at Warwick was second in 2007.
Uralla cowboy Chris Lowe is the only other cowboy to win Warwick and Mt Isa, the two richest rodeos on the Australian Professional Rodeo Association circuit.
Warwick cowboy Lachlan Slade finished third overall in the rookie bull ride.
In the Alex Turner Memorial Bareback Ride, United States cowboy Danny Storeys-Webb won with a score of 155 from Wantabadgery (NSW) rider Cody Angland on 154. Veteran Quirindi rider Darren Clarke was third on 153.
The memorial ride was conducted for the first time in memory of campdrafter/bareback rider Alex Turner who died last year.
The grandstand at the Warwick Showgrounds was packed for a memorial service for Alex, a fitting event for a rider who loved the two sports which come together at the Warwick Rodeo.
Warwick Show and Rodeo Society rodeo chairman Terry Keogh rated the rodeo side of the event as the best in his 38 years involvement.
