Rubber duckies get trial run ahead of derby

THIS bunch of duckies has been given the all-clear from the vet ahead of their race of a lifetime down Pioneer River during Mackay's Duck Derby, to be held next month.

That is according to one of the derby organisers, Belinda Ogilvie, who selected the top 50 fittest of the eco-friendly bunch for a trial run on the river last week.

"As expected they took to it like ducks to water," she said.

It was a second test they've conducted. The first they needed to pick the best breed of rubber ducky that would zoom down the river the best.

Last week organisers wanted to test what weather conditions would be appropriate for race day, when 3000 rubber ducks will hit the water.

Ms Ogilvie said the wind, tide and temperature the city experienced on Friday would be perfect.

"As expected, the tide was supposed to be quite similar to what it'll be on the day," she said.

It will take about an hour for the ducks to race from near Caneland Central to the finish line, near the Forgan Bridge.

Surf lifesavers will also be on hand on the day to help direct the ducks and resuscitate them if necessary.

People can buy a duck in the race and the winner will receive a $1250 Caneland shopping voucher. Second place will get a $500 voucher and third prize $250. Money raised from the duck derby will go towards surf life saving and Give Me 5 For Kids.
