Downs man's massive weight loss leads to fitness business
WHEN he was tipping the scales at a massive 185kg, Matt Gurney had no idea how much his life would change in only three years.
The Clifton man was 39, working away from home as a civil construction supervisor and his health was suffering.
Doctors told him he'd need to make some serious changes or he'd wind up dead before he made 45.
Mr Gurney said he took the warnings seriously.
"Things were very ordinary at that stage," he said.
"I'd always been a large lad, but had ballooned out to 185kg, was under a lot of stress, was drinking lots and eating poorly," he said.
"Something had to give."
On high doses of medication for high blood pressure and with a family history of heart disease and cancer, Mr Gurney took steps immediately.
"A few mates had undergone gastric sleeve surgery so I spoke to my GP and he recommended a specialist in Toowoomba," he said.
"It was by no means a quick fix, but it was the fastest way to get on the right track before I had a heart attack.
"It was the best thing I ever did."
Within three months of the surgery Mr Gurney's blookd pressure was back to normal.
"I started sleeping better as well," he said.
"I was eating less, although I didn't have much choice in that.
"Junk food was out of the question, I just couldn't stomach it any longer and before I knew it I'd lost 40kg."
While the initial signs were successful, Mr Gurney said he had so much further to go.
"My GP said I was a success story, but for me, I hadn't even started yet," he said.
"And that's when I started to knuckle down on the nutritional and fitness side of my journey back to good health."
Today, now 42, Mr Gurney is a healthy 95kg and runs his own business, Fitbloke Motivational Coaching.
"Working on site, I had access to great gym facilities and learned to love my exercise," he said.
"I started studying as well, completing a Certificate IV in weight management, which has become my passion and a major focus of my work with clients.
"Training in the gym is easy but there's a little gap there, especially in rural areas, for people who need help with overall weight management.
"That specialist support to knock it off and keep it off."
Mr Gurney said his business was all about bringing healthy lifestyle management options to the public in rural areas.
"I have clients in Pittsworth Warwick, Cambooya, Allora and here in Clifton," he said.
"I go to my clients and work around their schedules.
"I take what I need to clients homes or some have their own equipment as well."
Mr Gurney said his method was about assessing his clients' lifestyles.
"We look at diet, get them eating right with a proper meal plan," he said.
"Then work on an exercise regime, some they can do by themselves, the rest with me.
"It's a specially tailored program every time I visit - the whole idea is to offer clients the support they need when they're going through their weightloss battle.
"I wouldn't have got through it all with the support I had."
Mr Gurney will soon start running boot camps in Warwick.
