Drag racing devastated by death

THE Warwick District Drag Racing Club has lost one of its hardest-working members with the death last week of Six Banger Nationals organiser Mark Stewart.

Mark, 57, who organised the nationals each year with his wife Lyn, was fatally injured in a work accident.

Warwick club president Chris Loy said Mark was at the dragway the weekend before his death as volunteer commentator for the Mopar Muscle Meeting.

"A month ago, he brought his bobcat down (from Westbrook) for a day at the dragway and wouldn't even accept petrol money," Loy said.

After first racing in Sydney, Mark and Lyn Stewart moved north. He raced a six-cylinder super charged altered dubbed Panic.

"He was featured on the first T-shirt for Dragfest. Mark was a great volunteer for the club."

His funeral will be held tomorrow in Toowoomba. As a mark of respect, this weekend's Warwick bracket meeting has been cancelled.
