Dragfest organisers ready for weekend four second passes

DRAG racing returns to the Warwick Dragway this weekend with round 1 of the JP Racing Dragfest Series.

This weekend's event replaces the One-Eighth Mile Series, which was held at four dragways in recent years.

Warwick District Drag Racing Association vice-president John Loy said round 2 of Dragfest would be held in the traditional time slot in October between the Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600.

"We are expecting more than 100 nominations in blown outlaws, quick ET, extreme, extreme sedan, fast street, street, drag bike, radial, nostalgia street, street bike and young gun classes,” Loy said.

"There are drivers coming from as far as Mackay, Shellharbour and St George as well as a lot from Toowoomba.

"We have 20 coming from the Surfers Paradise Drag Club.”

Dennis Glanville from Warwick will drive his quick ET dragster at the weekend.

Fellow Warwick driver Matt Loy will compete in his Toyota Corona in fast street while Ross Costello will be in nostalgia street in his big block Chev-powered EJ Holden ute.

Warwick driver Glen Loy will drive a twin turbo charged Holden WB ute.

One of the crowd-pleasing visitors will be Brisbane driver Tim Caswell.

He will drive a old Ford Fairlane and could go head-to-head with Lockyer Valley driver Christine Steffens, who is ranked the fastest woman drag racer in Australia.

Steffens is a past Dragfest winner and a multi-time Australian champion who will reach a speed of well over 200kmh. She will be doing one-eighth mile (200m) passes in around 4.3 seconds.

The fastest qualifiers in each class will each win a trophy from L and K Motorsports.

The overall winners in each class will be those closest to their dial in times.

Gates open at 8am Saturday with scrutineering from 9am-2pm.

Qualifying will go from 10am-5pm Saturday with round 1 of racing from 5.30-7.30pm.

The drag racing fanatics will be at it again on Sunday with racing from 9am to mid afternoon.

This weekend's competition will mirror the program at Dragfest each October for the past 13 years.

John said the plan was to continue the two-round Dragfest format in years to come.

"We will have 30 volunteers on hand to organise the meeting,” he said.

"There are a few volunteers who travel from Toowoomba and Brisbane to help out, they just enjoy being involved.

"It would be good if we can match the crowd numbers we had at Dragfest in October.

"We already have 80 nominations and I am confident we will get well over 100.”

Admission is $15 a day with kids under-13 free with a paying adult.

Nominations can be made on the association website or on the day.

After this weekend, the next event will be the Mopar Muscle Weekend on April 29-30.
