Dragons star in emerging origin squad for January camp

RUGBY LEAGUE: Collegians outside back Zac Beckwith will head to a camp at Currimindi in mid January after being selected in the 2018 Queensland Rugby League Emerging Origin squad for under-15 players in Queensland.

He is the only player in the squad from the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League area.

Beckwith played on the wing for the Central Crows U14 team last season after making Warwick and District and Mustangs teams.

The emerging origin program was established by former Collegians senior player and Broncos coach Wayne Bennett in 2001.

Queensland State of Origin coach Kevin

Walters oversees the program.

The first of Beckwith's commitments under the program will be a camp at Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast on January 13-16.

"It is exciting to be in the emerging Origin program,” Beckwith said.

"I first played for Collegians in under-9s and have a dream to play NRL footy one day.

"Being part of the program will help my development as a player.

"I plan to work hard on my defence this season.”

He is also part of the Brisbane Broncos elite development program.

Last season, Beckwith played fullback for the Collegians Red team which made the U14 finals but played all his representative footy on the wing.

He won the 100m/200m double for 14 years boys at the Darling Downs Track and Field Championships in Warwick and was second in high jump.

He goes into Year 9 at Assumption College this year and will again play club footy for Collegians.
