Bieber medicine for Nadine's heart

THE doctors who began treating heart transplant recipient Nadine James for a debilitating virus two months ago knew what was at stake … a seat at a Justin Bieber concert.

Nadine, 16, travelled from her Mooloolah home yesterday for the pop phenom's one-off Brisbane concert 6kg lighter and far from 100% – but, hey, it was the Bieber.

“The concert was definitely a motivator (in her recovery),” dad Robert James said yesterday. “We had the whole medical team (at Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane) working to make sure she's there … she's certainly very excited about it.”

Nadine, who has not been able to attend Year 11 classes at Caloundra Christian College for the past eight weeks because of the virus, had a heart transplant last July after being diagnosed with the heart muscle disease cardiomyopathy.

When her dad drove her to Brisbane to receive the transplant, Nadine sang Bieber, Taylor Swift and Jonas Brothers songs. She attended last night's concert with a school friend and her father.

Although she still has to use a drip twice a day because of the virus, Mr James said he was not concerned over her attending the Brisbane Entertainment Centre gig along with thousands of mostly young screaming fans.

“It will be great for her,” he said.

“We took her to the Taylor Swift concert (in Brisbane) last year before her transplant. She had an absolute ball.”
