Drive safely, keep your cool this long weekend

WITH heavy traffic continuing for the public holiday today, drivers have been urged to keep their cool.

"Congestion can test the patience of the calmest drivers but frustration is never an excuse to take risks, especially unnecessary overtaking," said RACQ representative Lauren Ritchie.

"Be patient and go with the flow - if there is a passing lane in a few kilometres it is safer to wait until then to make your move," she said.

"When it's safe to overtake, drivers need to look ahead and see whether it's worth it and whether there's enough room to do so safely.

"It doesn't make sense to take risks passing other vehicles when you might only save seconds on your journey."

Ms Ritchie said courtesy played a large part in ensuring everyone arrived at their destination safely.

"Be considerate of other drivers. If you are a slower vehicle, keep in the left hand lane and pull over if you can to let other drivers pass," she said

Drivers are reminded not to overtake unless there is clear view of approaching traffic on bends or crests.
