Driver aims to break a record in Morgan Park historics
MOTOR RACING: Three weeks ago, Gold Coast driver Chris Farrell competed in a Masters Series Race in a support event to the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
This weekend he will be aiming to break his own historic lap record in the 40th Historic Queensland race meeting at Morgan Park Raceway.
Farrell hails from Helensvale and has historic records in four classes with four different cars, including the overall historic track record at Morgan Park Raceway.
He headed to Warwick on Friday night after hosting an education program at the Gold Coast for dentists from all over the world.
"We sell dental appliances around the world through our business, MRC,” Farrell said.
"It will be a good break to go from business on Friday to racing on Saturday.”
Farrell broke the overall historic lap record regularly at the May historic meeting, the first since the re-surfacing of the raceway.
Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland vice-president Peter Walsh said Farrell would exceed 240kmh at the raceway.
"Bill Norman from Crows Nest will be the toughest opposition to Chris in the group R racing cars class. Both will be driving Ralt RT4s open wheeler racing cars in this class,” he said.
"Both will be aiming to break the record Chris set in 2012 in this class.”
Breaking records isn't as easy as it seems, according to Farrell.
"I need to be consistent to break a record and make sure I don't make a mistake,” he said.
"I must drive smooth lines and be precise with my driving.
"The track is 100% improved after the re-surfacing.”
Qualifying begins at 8.30am Saturday followed by 35 races across Saturday and Sunday and includes trophy feature races. There will be 175 drivers.
Admission is $20 a day or $30 for the weekend.
Accompanied under-15 patrons are free. Concessions available.
There is free access to the pits and the chance to talk to the drivers.
