Man fined $803 after crashing into truck while using phone

A MOTORIST involved in a traffic crash with a truck which "scared the absolute poop out of him" was fined $803 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.

Frank Adrian Wiersma, 27, pleaded guilty to one count each of using a mobile phone while driving and driving without due care and attention after the car he was driving collided with the back of a truck 20km north of Dingo on October 28.

Police prosecutor sergeant Kathryn Stafford told the court Wiersma was using his mobile phone to connect to the car stereo system when he collided with the rear of a truck at 5pm.

He told police he did not realise the truck was slowing down because he "was not paying attention".

Defence lawyer Jack Blackburn told the court Wiersma was "playing with iTunes through his car stereo".

"He took his eyes off the road for a second and that was enough," he said.

"The accident scared the absolute poop out of him".
