Driver keeps his lead at raceway
MOTORSPORT: Toowoomba driver Cameron Shields was in fine form in the Australian Motorsport Racing Series round at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend.
The Toowoomba teen extended his Australian Formula 3 Championship lead to 15 points on the back of a fast and consistent performance.
Shields qualified second at Warwick's Morgan Park Raceway before claiming two seconds and a first place from his three races.
"I'm really happy with how we went over the weekend,” Shields said.
"I think we just missed our window in qualifying but second was a good result.
"We thought Warwick might be our weaker track this year because we didn't have the chance to do a lot of testing.”
A lack of track experience meant little in the opening race with Shields setting a Formula 3 lap record.
"It was a challenging weekend,” Shields said.
"We were right on the pace in race one, setting the record and grabbing second.
"In race two we were doing really well before a safety car hurt our chances.
"It was a tough race.
"We started in the wet before the track dried up and the pace quickened.
"Race three was a really wet one and we grabbed first which was good.”
