Driver rated a sensation after two months in Europe
MOTORSPORT: There has been a sensational reaction in European motor racing circles to the first three appearances of Matt Campbell.
McElrea Racing owner Andy McElrea, his wife Mel and two of Campbell's equity partners flew from Australia to Barcelona for the first appearance by the Warwick driver in a major race meeting in Europe.
"The reaction to what Matt has done in his first three race meetings has been sensational especially when they become aware of how little racing he has done compared to the European drivers,” McElrea said.
Campbell came fifth and third in the two Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup rounds in Barcelona and then fifth at Monaco before finishing with a win and third in last weekend's German Porsche Carrera Cup round at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
"I was quietly confident Matt could finish in the top three in Austria,” McElrea said.
"It is at the discretion of Matt's team Fach Auto Tech whether he runs in Porsche Carrera Cup rounds but they nominated him as they believe in Matt.
"The Europeans see Matt as a ripper of a bloke and a down to earth country kid not like some drivers his age who are not as good as drivers but are attention seeking show-offs.”
McElrea said Campbell had as good as start to a motorsport career in Europe as any Australian driver.
"That is not bad for a kid from Warwick,” he said.
Campbell has three Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup rounds in July in Austria, United Kingdom and Hungary.
Later in the year, he will be home to co-drive in three V8 Enduro races with current champion Shane van Gisbergen.
