Driver travels 1640km to compete at dragway
DRAG RACING: Savos Pandelakis has travelled 1640km from Townsville to compete in the 6 Banger Nationals this weekend.
His pit crew are wife Helen Pandelakis and his mate Shane Turley. The car is a front engine dragster which he has driven for the past eight years.
"We came second last year at Warwick Dragway in the modified group and are aiming to win it this year,” he said.
His home track is 400km away in the Mackay area but the trip to Warwick will be the biggest for a drag racing meeting this year.
"I have taken a week off work to compete,” he said.
Pandelakis has a best pass of 5.44 seconds for the one-eighth mile at Mackay at 123mph and he expects to do the same time at Warwick Dragway.
"The Warwick track was pretty good last year but we had some transmission problems so I didn't leave the lights as well as I would have hoped,” he said.
"The car is ready to go this year.”
Father and daughter Damien and Rachel Holyoak will be two of the starters in on bikes in the bracket meeting at Warwick Dragway tomorrow.
There is a Saturday bracket meeting at the dragway and then the 6 Banger Nationals on Sunday.
Other than the bikes, a large number of the competitors will be in the bracket meeting on Saturday and then the 6 Banger Nationals on Sunday.
Warwick drivers set to compete include Matt Loy, Glen Loy and Ross Costello in extreme sedan and Brittany Rigney in super street.
There are drag racers coming from far as Sydney in the south.
Nominations remain open until the start of qualifying and at least 100 are expected for each meeting.
Gates open at 8am each day with qualifying Saturday from noon and racing from 6pm.
On Sunday, the six-cylinder cars will start qualifying at 10am and racing from 12.30pm. Scrutineering from 10am. This meeting heralds the end of the winter recess for the Warwick District Drag Racing Association.
