Drug lab, marijuana plants found as drug operation closes

MORE than 100 MDMA pills, about 50 marijuana plants and 2kg of marijuana have been seized by Mackay police, marking the closure of a protracted drug operation.

Detective Acting Inspector Jeremy Novosel, Inspector for Crime and Support Services, said the drugs were found as police executed nine search warrants in the Mackay area in the past two days.

A clandestine amphetamine lab, firearms including a handgun and rifle and chemicals thought to be used for producing methylamphetamine were also found.

The marijuana was in two hydroponic systems.

Fifty cannabis plants, 2kg of cannabis, more than a hundred MDMA pills and firearms including a handgun and rifle were seized by police as part of Operation North Slingshot.

The seizures marked the closure of two-year-long Operation North Slingshot.

Over the past two days, six Mackay people - four men and two women - were charged with drugs offences including trafficking, production and supply.

A 25-year-old Moranbah man is also expected to face charges.

They are expected to face Mackay Magistrates Court this month.

Det Acting Insp Novosel said one of those men, charged with trafficking, had frequented Moranbah.

As a result of Operation North Slingshot, over the past two years a total of 31 offenders had faced or were facing more than 60 charges in the region.

"The investigation grew based on information that police were able to obtain," Det Acting Insp Novosel said.

"There was identification of some major identities within the drug networks in the Mackay area and, throughout the two-year operation, those key suspects… were apprehended."
