Drunk teen takes $900 from sushi joint, reoffends days later
A WARWICK teen who climbed over the counter of Warwick Sushi while it was closed and stole $900 claims he was intoxicated when he took the cash.
But a court has heard, just four days later Jack Marshall Laredo was again drunk when he worked with another person to steal a handbag containing a purse, passport, driver's licence and bank cards.
Magistrate Jason Schubert said the 19-year-old then used a debit card to buy cigarettes from Coles Express in Warwick in March.
"While the co-accused was the person who actually took the bag, you were complicit afterwards," he said.
Laredo yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing and one count of fraud at Warwick Magistrates Court.
Defence lawyer Phil Crook said Laredo had suffered serious alcohol-related health problems in the wake of the offences.
"Most of his stomach lining has been lost from alcohol," he said. "A few days after the offences he went to hospital for four days and is on regular follow ups by a doctor, he instructs he has an operation listed for late next month."
Mr Schubert said due to Laredo's intoxication, he was "not entirely co-operative" when questioned by police.
The court heard this was until he was shown CCTV footage of the bag being swiped by another person before being handed to Laredo.
As Laredo had no previous criminal history, Mr Schubert said it was surprising he was fronting court for that type of offending.
He acknowledged Laredo's health concerns and noted he had not drunk alcohol since March.
Laredo was sentenced to 12 months' probation and ordered to serve 50 hours of unpaid community service.
Mr Schubert also ordered him to pay a total of $940 restitution.
