Dry weather forces cattle sell-off at Warwick sale
HOT, dry conditions have caused a sell-off at the Warwick Cattle Sale, with cattle coming from the western border districts to be sold.
Supply was up by 27% at yesterday's sale.
Buyer attendance was not as good as the previous sale, with some major exporters absent from the buying panel.
Buyers operated selectively on the young light weight cattle and prices suffered accordingly, with losses of 15c to 20c/kg.
However medium and heavy weight yearling steers and heifers to feed experienced firm demand to receive only quality related price changes.
Export slaughter lines of heavy grown steers, bullocks and cows could not maintain the previous weeks prices and lost 15c to 20c/kg.
Most of the calves returned to the paddock at a cheaper price, with most around 293c, with the very occasional sale to 330.2c/kg.
Vealer steers to feed and restockers mostly sold around 315c to 321c with sales to 325c/kg.
Vealer heifers sold around 281c, with some to local butchers reaching 309.2c/kg.
Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to 331.2c to average 314c/kg.
Medium weights to feed consistently sold in the 320c range with some to 333.2c/kg.
Heavy weights to feed averaged 317c and made to 325c, with the occasional B muscle class to the trade reaching 335.2c/kg.
Light weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 285c and made to 299.2c/kg.
Medium weights to feed averaged in the 290c range and made to 305.2c/kg.
Local trade descriptions made to 332.2c to average close to 299c/kg.
A small selection of heavy grown steers averaged 281c and a handful of bullocks made to 312.2c/kg.
Medium weight 2 score cows to restockers averaged 221c while those to processors averaged 217c/kg.
Good heavy cows averaged 245c, with the very occasional sale to 260c/kg.
Heavy bulls made to 300.2c/kg.
