Five ducklings rescued from grate

Ducklings' lucky escape thanks to ingenious bag hack

FIVE ducklings had a lucky escape at Glenview yesterday, thanks to a Sunshine Coast woman's ingenious hack.

Deborah Turner noticed a family of ducks crossing the road on Steve Irwin Way on Wednesday when five ducklings fell into a grate on the side of the road.

"The mum and dad were crossing the road ... with their 10-plus babies," she said.

"The mother and father got onto the footpath, and the babies were trying to get up over the kerb but couldn't quite get there.

"I was stopped on the side of the road and got out to help them because I could see the chicks heading towards the grate, but I was too late and they fell in."

She said her first thought was that the mother duck wouldn't hang around for long, so she sprang into action to get the five ducklings to safety.

Luckily enough, Deborah had some Woolworths reusable bags in her car that she used to lift them out.

"I looked in my car trying to find something I could use to get them out. I had the Woolies bag and the ratchet straps, so just had to work out what to do with what I had," she said.

"It was the ducklings' life saver that I had a Woolies bag. I didn't realise until then how versatile they really are.

Deborah tied each handle of the bag to the ratchet straps and lowered it into the grate, waiting for the ducklings to walk onto the bag and pulling each one out safely.

"Thanks Woolies for having reusable bags that can be used for so many other things," she said.

"Make sure you always have your Woolies reusable bag in your car, you never know when you might need to use it."
