Dumped supermarket trolleys an eyesore on Warwick streets

ONE of Warwick's beautiful nature walks is becoming a graveyard for shopping trolleys and residents aren't impressed.

For friends Liana Cmeneguzzi and Natasha Lambert seeing a trolley appear in the water during one of their walks is no surprise any more.

The two friends said it's becoming part of the scenery.

"There is always bound to be one that shows up in the river when we're walking,” Ms Lambert said.

The number of abandoned supermarket trolleys being discovered among the Warwick area appears to be on the rise.

Residents said trolleys were lining the streets of the CBD with Albert, Grafton and Dragon streets as the popular dump sites outside of Palmerin St.

Some believe the problem has become worse with the introduction of more big chain stores.

Most residents can't believe the amount left in front yards in residential and remote areas.

"There's a few down the street I live, they're always there and it doesn't seem like anyone cares to take them back to the shops,” Mrs Shelley Harvey said.

"It's becoming a big problem in a lot of towns, we live about 20 kilometres out of town and we still see them appear in paddocks or at the front of secluded driveways,” Mrs Thelma-Jean Van Loo said.

The consensus is the trolley dumping culprits are "lazy” and show little respect.

"It's a disgrace how they're treated, it's pure laziness and something needs to happen to make them stop,” Mrs Clare Jeffries said.

Both Coles and Woolworths do have trolley return services that involve contacting a collection team by phone or through the stores app.

Spokesperson from Woolworths said most of its customers were following the rules and returning trolleys to the store.

"We provide trolleys for the convenience of our shoppers and find the overwhelming majority do the right thing and return them.”

A Coles spokesperson said they were working on the issue at hand.

"We are very aware of the inconvenience for our customers and the communities that we operate in. We are doing significant amount of work to minimise this.”

Residents believe locking out mechanisms or coin operated trolleys will need to be introduced to combat the situation.
