Duo 'stars' at gathering

THEY may have been dressed up like movie stars, but Crs Mally McMurtrie and Jo McNally also got down to some serious business at the Women in Local Government Conference at the glamorous Palazzo Versace last weekend.

Cr McNally said it was a great opportunity to network with councillors and officers from other regions across Queensland, some as far away as Mount Isa, Hinchinbrook Island, Kowanyama.

The conference was opened by Premier Anna Bligh and the visitors were welcomed to the Gold Coast by their Deputy Mayor, Cr Daphne McDonald.

Speakers included Cr Paul Bell (president of LGAQ) and Campbell Newman (leader LNP).

Our two local representatives also put forward three motions, which were passed and will now have our president Kathy Bensted from Scenic Rim Regional Council make contact with the relevant state and federal government departments.

The first was about a rate discount for self-funded retirees, the next was about Cunningham’s Gap helipad solar lighting, while the third was about the Eight Mile intersection overpass.

The annual conference, which the two councillors paid their own way to attend, had a movie-star theme in which Cr McNally dressed as Audrey Hepburn and Cr McMurtrie as Marilyn Monroe.
