Early mornings don't faze joint sports star winner
SPORTS STARS: Waking at 4.15am to head to rowing training doesn't faze joint Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year winner Ella Hudson.
On Tuesday night, Hudson and Zac Caterson were named joint winners of the award.
Both are national gold medallist and both are aiming for world junior championships and ultimately senior Australian representation.
Hudson said she had never said no when waking for training.
"It does get quite cold on winter mornings but you warm up pretty quick when on the water,” she said.
Caterson trains with his father in Warwick and also travels weekly to Brisbane for throws training.
"I like all four throwing events but my best chances for the long term at this stage are discus and javelin,” he said.
The first ambition for Hudson is to make the Australian team for the world juniors next year.
She is currently in Year 11 at boarding school in Brisbane and trains with the rowing squad from her school, Somerville House.
After her joint win, Hudson was quick to heap praise on the Warwick community for its support of its athletes.
"It is great to see the depth of sport stars in the Warwick area which reflects the support this community gives to athletes looking for a future in sport,” she said.
Caterson's first ambition at world level is to compete for Australia at the world youth championships in three years time.
He said it was encouraging to break some records set by Matthew Denny, a past junior and senior sports star of the year winner, who went to the 2016 Olympics.
Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement Award winner , Rose City boxer Jake Wyllie, isn't letting the grass grow under his feet.
He is eyeing off next year's Commonwealth Games but also the Olympics at Tokyo in 2020 and is prepared to do the hard work.
