Easter tourist dollars for Southern Downs

THE Easter Bunny will deliver more than baskets of chocolate goodies to the region this weekend, with Southern Downs tourism operators almost totally booked out.

Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said for every day visit to our region, the average drop into the local economy was $139 a person.

"If, over the four-day break, 2000 people pop in to spend time with friends and family or visit for the Easter Fair, Rock Swap or Allora Campdraft, that's $278,000 going into local businesses," Mrs Vellacott said.

And with our caravan parks and camping grounds jam-packed this weekend, the figure could easily reach half a million dollars.

"In talking with camping operators particularly, they are chock-a-block with campers this weekend - Goomburra Valley Campground, Killarney View Caravan Park and Cabins and Glendon Camping Ground are all full," Mrs Vellacott said.

"Even the newest camping spot in the Goomburra Valley, Goomburra Forest Retreat, only got their sign-off from council this week and they are already full for Easter. In good news, there is still a little room at Warwick's Oasis Big Four Caravan Park and Leslie Dam."

Margaret Cairns from Goomburra Forest Retreat was stoked her new camping ground got the council tick of approval just in time for the Easter long weekend.

"We opened the camping ground across from where the cottages are; we've owned the land all this time but we'd never done anything with it so we decided we'd diversify," Mrs Cairns said.

If this opening weekend is anything to go by, the new grounds are sure to be a popular attraction for both visitors and Southern Downs residents looking to get away for the weekend.

"It was a bit of a struggle cleaning up the creek after the floods; our neighbours were doing the same thing so it was hard to get help but it's looking good," Mrs Cairns said.

The council approved a brand new amenities block for the camping grounds, as well as a dump point which is already being taken advantage of by guests as well as those venturing to the national park.

"It's been a lot of work but it's certainly been worthwhile - people have been very impressed with the amenities," Mrs Cairns said.

Over the weekend, Mrs Cairns has 60 campers booked as well as six lots of guests booking out her cottages.

"The weather is just beautiful - we've had a few showers this week but at the moment it's lovely," she said.

Mrs Vellacott said the fact Warwick and surrounds is an events hub means there is always something to do here.

"Over Easter visitors can have tea and a tour of the majestic Abbey of the Roses or for the curious, they can fossick about the antiques, books, bottles, collectables, gem stones, jewellery and coins at the Rock Swap at the Warwick Showgrounds," she said.

"One of the major drawcards for this area is that we are family-friendly. From feeding the parrots at Queen Mary Falls, horse-riding at Cherrabah and Bestbrook, to just enjoying the thrill of throwing a line in the river, creeks or dams. It's not hard to keep the kids amused around here.

"And of course one of the key Easter drawcards is the Easter Fair in Leslie Park, where the Easter Bunny will stop in and get the kids hyped for a wonderful chocolatey weekend."
