VISITORS flocked to the Southern Downs over the weekend to enjoy one last holiday outdoors before the cooler weather sets in.

Visitor Information Centre supervisor Charee Aspinall said about 90 visitors had dropped into the office by lunch time yesterday. Mrs Aspinall said most had travelled from Ipswich and Brisbane and brought a tent and swag.

"The natural attractions are what have been the big things over Easter and there have been a lot of campers," she said.

"Out on the highway today there has been camper trailer after camper trailer."

Mrs Aspinall said events such as the orienteering competition and car sprints also drew large crowds to the area, benefiting local businesses.

"Morgan Park is the best thing and always brings a lot of people to the area and fills up the motels," she said.

"They usually just come to do the car thing but they always need to eat and sleep somewhere," she said.

Mrs Aspinall said a big calendar of events for the region had her predicting a great year for tourism in the Southern Downs.

Queen Mary Falls Caravan Park owner Louise Reed said she hadn't had a chance to put her feet up over the four-day weekend. "We have been very busy and the caravan park is already booked out next weekend," she said.

Mrs Reed said although Christmas was also a busy time for her business, Easter was a favourite time for campers.

"I think a lot people have come out because it is the last chance to go camping before it gets cool," she said. "And people like to come here because you can have things like camp fires."

Mrs Reed, who has owned the business for the past 12 months, said the Labor Day long weekend in May was sure to bring the visitors back to the area.
