Eastern Suburbs 13s beat Wattles
EASTERN Suburbs scored a try after the hooter in a last-ditch effort to beat Wattles in the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League under-13 minor semi-final on Saturday.
Centre Brent Walker scored out wide to reduce the Wattles' margin to two points but the conversion missed and Wattles now proceed to next week's preliminary final against Collegians at Tenterfield.
Suburbs led 10-0 before Wattles took a 14-10 lead. Suburbs levelled the scores and then Wattles scored a converted try for a 20-14 lead.
Eight semi-finals were hosted by the Eastern Suburbs club at St Mark's Oval on Saturday.
Suburbs played Wattles in four junior demonstration games from U7 to U10 and met Collegians in an U11 game.
Suburbs president Garry McEwan said the day of junior rugby league was fantastic.
“The behaviour from all the players, parents, supporters and officials was great,” McEwan said.
“All the other clubs helped Suburbs out on the day which was great for the future of rugby league.”
All major semi-final winners on Saturday have qualified for the grand finals to be hosted by the Wattles club on September 4 at Platz Oval.
Goondiwindi beat Collegians in three of the major semi-finals so already has three teams in the grand finals.
Wattles have qualified for the U12 grand final.

Minor semi-finals: U12 Goondiwindi 20 d Collegians 14, U13 Wattles 20 d Eastern Suburbs 18, U14 Wattles 46 d Stanthorpe 24, U16 Eastern Suburbs 26 d Border 24.
