Toowoomba workers to wear health check message

TOOWOOMBA workers will be spreading the message of men's health in a very unique way - by wearing it.

Easternwell has teamed with Barcoo Workwear and the PA Research Foundation with a quirky campaign to 'nag' men in a new way, with work shirts that have a reminder to make an annual appointment with a GP.

Easternwell's energy chief executive officer Warren Willmington has spearheaded the cause after a close friend was successfully treated for prostate cancer thanks to early detection.

"Nowadays, most men are time poor and if they aren't keeping up with regular checks with their doctor it is easy to let things slip by."

The reminder to see a doctor is a posthumous message from Lance Jelley, from Toowoomba, who died last month from prostate cancer.

Mr Jelley was a close friend of Barcoo CEO Mike Kaye, and had together with Mr Jelley's daughter Liz, picked messages to appear on the shirts in the hope his death would not be in vain.

"Men in my industry are terrible at going to the doctor and my dad had that similar attitude: yet he would nag all of us to keep up our health checks but would put it off for himself," Ms Jelley said.

Some proceeds from the sale of the shirts will also go to the PA Research Foundation.
