EXCLUSIVE: Warwick is another step closer to an upgrade of the Eight Mile intersection, with the State Government announcing the completion of a business case for an overpass.

It's been 12 months since the Palaszczuk government announced it was putting together the business case for the upgrade.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the completed business case would be used for a funding submission to the Federal Government.

Mr Bailey said a planning project for the intersection was completed recently.

"We're concerned about the safety of the intersection at Eight Mile, which is why we initiated the planning project last year," he said.

"I appreciate this is a priority for people in the Southern Downs and I want to assure the community we're committed to improving road safety here.

"Previously, there was no business case for an upgrade, so that means it could not have been placed on a list to receive funding."

One of the key objectives of the planning project was to determine to best option for an upgrade.

"The preferred option is an overpass for traffic travelling from Toowoomba to Warwick, passing over and then merging with the Cunningham Hwy," Mr Bailey said.

While Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg said he hadn't received formal notification about the business case, it was encouraging news.

"Last discussions I had was with departmental officials in the past 12 months or so where they were submitting things to the government for submission," he said.

"It's taken longer than it should with the change of government, but now it's a matter of getting it approved and submitted for funding.

"All I've wanted is for the Eight Mile to be listed in the four-year plan.

"If you're in the queue and it's programmed you'll know when it happened."

Mr Springborg was also pleased the Palaszczuk government had endorsed the idea of an overpass.

"There has to be separation of the traffic coming in from Toowoomba towards Warwick and the traffic from Brisbane through to Toowoomba," he said.
