Eight semis in biggest day of season for the WDJRL
THREE weekends of Warwick and District Junior Rugby League finals start at Eastern Suburbs grounds in Warwick this Satruday.
There will be six games on the main Eastern Suburbs field and three on the second field, between the clubhouse and the river.
The preliminary finals will be held at Tenterfield on September 2, with the grand finals at Platz Oval, Clifton, on September 9.
Finals venues alternate between clubs each year.
This season, there are no under-11 finals but there will be demonstration games on all three finals days.
Semi finals will be played in U12, U14 and U16 age groups and league tag.
David Landers, from Tenterfield, was again Warwick and District president for the 2017 season.
Glyn Rees is secretary and Rob Weaver treasurer.
The board also includes David Fleming, Craig Frattini and Ian McGill.
Warwick and District player numbers are up 7% on last season.
This season games were played in U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U14 and U16 age groups, as well as the U16 girls' league tag competition.
There were almost 200 girls registered for league tag and younger rugby league age groups. Girls are allowed to play in competitions with the boys from U7-U12.
The league had an ALIVE round, which promotes the importance of helping with mental health issues in young people, and the RizeUp round raised awareness about domestic violence.
Warwick and District clubs assisted with sourcing household items to be donated to victims of domestic violence who are seeking alternative accommodation.
After the end of the club finals, there will still be rugby league to play with the U12 Mustangs Challenge at Goondiwindi.
Warwick and District has selected a team for the challenge carnival in the school holidays and organisers hope 8-10 teams compete during two days on two fields at Goondiwindi.
During the school holidays, a Warwick and District U15 team will travel to Bundaberg for the annual Barry Brimelow Carnival.
This carnival is a platform for players aiming for play for the Warwick and District U16s next season with the aim of making the South West Mustangs and then the Central Crows representative teams.
A number of Warwick and District players were part of Mustangs and Crows teams this season which gave them a chance to play in front of talent scouts from NRL clubs.
Two past Warwick and District players - Tristan Powell (formerly Goondiwindi) and Will Evans (formerly Tenterfield) - played for the Queensland U16 team in an interstate game against New South Wales this season.
