Elections take nasty twist

TOOWOOMBA'S local council elections have turned nasty with police called in to investigate several incidents in recent days.

Council candidate and safe driving advocate Murray Choat has attracted the attention of Toowoomba Police after motorists complained about his aggressive campaign tactics.

He was reported to police by a motorist who claimed he was attempting to flag down drivers on the New England Hwy near Mt Kynoch yesterday morning.

Police spoke to Mr Choat and no action was taken.

Mr Choat dismissed the complaint as a deliberate attempt by one of his opponents to discredit him.

"This is obviously an attack from another candidate," he said.

"And it's a pretty callous one.

"I was in a safe environment and I was behaving.

"It's amazing actually.

"Haven't the police got better things to do?"

Mr Choat said he would never compromise the safety of motorists and was passionate about improving driving habits and conditions across the Toowoomba region.

Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Phil Spencer has gone to Goombungee Police after his campaign trailer was tampered with while parked at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

Mr Spencer was travelling on the Gore Hwy with his partner Suzanne last week when a wheel from the trailer broke free.

He said there was evidence that someone had tampered with the trailer.

"This has gone too far," he said.

"It's dangerous and it's stupidity - this is people's lives we're talking about."

Anyone with any information on Mr Spencer's trailer is urged to contact Goombungee Police.

The two incidents come after mayoral candidate Joe Ramia went to Toowoomba Police after dozens of his corflute signs went missing.
