UPDATE 5PM: THE man accused of a bomb hoax that shut down a large section of Ipswich on Wednesday will be held in custody.

Daniel Carl Rigg, 28, faced Ipswich Magistrates Court today on charges of bomb hoax and possession of instructions for producing dangerous drugs.

The case was adjourned to May 25, with Rigg remanded in custody.

EARLIER: A man will appear in court today following a bomb hoax in Eastern Heights.

An emergent declaration was declared yesterday under the Public Safety Preservation Act after a suspicious device was allegedly located at a Cemetery Rd residence.

Police will allege they discovered a jerry can with a mobile phone, wires and other items attached to it about 2pm.

The bomb squad was called in to investigate the device further, and it was confirmed as a hoax several hours later.

The 28-year-old man has been charged with bomb hoax and possession of instructions for producing dangerous drugs.

EARLIER: Police were forced to shut down a large area of Eastern Heights on Wednesday afternoon following a bomb scare.

A suspect device was discovered on a private property on Cemetery Rd about 2pm, prompting an emergency declaration that resulted in peak hour road shut-downs at several busy intersections.

The bomb squad was called in to investigate further, with the device confirmed as a hoax about 5pm.

Police conducted further safety checks before reopening roads in the surrounding area.
 

EARLIER: Police have declared an emergency situation at Eastern Heights following the discovery of a suspect device.

The area surrounding a house on Cemetery Rd has been closed off as police inspect a suspect explosive device in a rear shed.

The bomb squad has been called in.

Police have cordons in place near the intersections of Chermside and Salisbury Rds, Jackes St and Cemetery Rd, Whitehill and Cemetery Rds, Rapur and Warner Sts and Shapcott and Chermside Rd.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

Police are unable to comment further on the nature of the device at the moment.
