VIDEO: Simulated plane crash sends Rocky crews into action

WITH smoke billowing over the tarmac, emergency services rushed to get the injured to safety and into the care of medical staff.

Fog had been hanging thick over the city when a turbo prop passenger plane aborted a landing at Rockhampton Airport, clipping a lighting tower and careering into the terminal.

This was the scenario for the airport's annual emergency exercise on the tarmac today.

While Councillor Neil Fisher said the situation "might sound a little bit crazy", the exercise was modelled on two accidents in the United States.

"We're making sure that not only Rockhampton Airport, but all our emergency services, are as best equipped as possible if something as serious as this was to ever happen," he said.

Cr Fisher said the training was a requirement for every airport, but having a full scenario involving every aspect of the emergency response went beyond the basics.

"Everybody there has a role to play," he said.

"What you don't want is that everyone arrives and they're tripping over one another or there are critical mistakes made just when you don't want it.

"I take a lot of pride in Rockhampton Airport because we do put such an emphasis on improving our operation."

Cr Fisher said the scenario given to emergency crews changed annually, with almost a year of planning involved.

"Think of any possible disaster that could affect the airport and try and have those skills ready to deal with it," he said.
