Scots boarder Emily off to Narrabeen
THE girl from Dirranbandi is moving closer to securing a spot in the top Australian Sevens team.
The Scots PGC College boarder Emily Bass showed her class in a game of girls sevens rugby at Briggs Oval when her school played Hawera High School from New Zealand late last week.
Bass has been invited to an Australian training camp at Narrabeen in New South Wales.
Scots PGC rugby coach Damien Cahill said Bass was on track to make the Australian Sevens team.
"She is a chance for sevens rugby at the Olympics in 2020," Cahill said.
The Scots PGC push into seven rugby received a major boost when two members of the Australian Sevens team visited the school.
Caroline Bakalahi and Mollie Gray play for the Wallaroos in the 15-woman game and passed on some rugby hints to Bass and her team-mates from Scots PGC.
The visit was arranged as Cahill coached Gray's brother Josh when he was part of the Australian Services team.
While the school rugby season is gearing down from a boy's perspective, the Scots PGC girls are preparing for three games against the Warwick Cowboys girls at rugby league home games.
The Cowboys women play league tag in the Toowoomba competition but with only three teams for the women, there are plenty of opportunities to put on a scratch match with the girls from Scots PGC.
Scots PGC puts a lot of emphasis on touch and hosts carnivals and many of the players, including Bass, impress at both touch and sevens rugby.
Cahill has major plans for the school in sport.
He said planning had already started for a possible rugby tour to South Africa.
If the tour did go ahead, the likelihood would be for the boys to tour with a team in 15-man rugby and the girls in sevens.
Cahill said there were some parents from South Africa who were involved with the school who would help with the possible organisation of a trip.
"With the value of the dollar, it is attractive to go to South Africa rather than New Zealand," Cahill said.
