END ABUSE: Warwick to show DV victims they're not alone

ISOLATION and fear can plague victims of domestic violence but a vigil tonight is set to show vulnerable Warwick residents they are not alone.

A peace walk and vigil will be held from 5.30pm, on the National Day of Remembrance for those impacted by domestic and family violence.

It will also encourage the community to make the declaration that violence and abuse must end.

Warwick Safe Haven Inc president Bette Bonney said gathering together helped build respectful relationships to support those going through tough times and create change.

"They (victims) often don't talk about it and often that's because they're threatened, they have a lot of fear," she said.

"We want people to know they're not alone, it's not normal, there are people that they can call to talk to about it and stay safe."

Domestic violence survivor Holly Winter will be a guest speaker at the vigil, who is the creator of Live in Your Light and a consultant with the Griffith University Violence Research and Prevention Program.

"I had always found the domestic violence space to be dark and grey with lots of sadness," Ms Winter said.

"I wanted to show survivors the tools I used to create a brand new, beautiful, colourful life full of opportunity and positivity and that it is possible to not only start again but to live in your light and create your best life yet."

Warwick sporting and community figure Keith Clarke will also be speaking at the event, sharing the importance of clubs creating a safe space for those enduring violence.

"People who are affected often feel vulnerable often don't feel confident to come out but we're there on their behalf," Mrs Bonney said.

Participants for the peace walk will gather at Warwick Town Hall at 5.30pm before walking to Leslie Park.

The vigil will commence at the Youth Stage at Leslie Park at 6pm opened by Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie.
