End of an era as historic Freestone church snapped up

AFTER almost a year of negotiations, public meetings and furious speculation, Freestone's Anglican Church has a new owner.

Warwick Real Estate agent Doug Rickert finalised the sale on Monday to a Southern Downs woman who wishes to remain anonymous.

He said the property attracted much interest from prospective buyers.

"It was a huge amount compared to any other type of property we have,” Mr Rickert said.

"The interest was from all over the state. It was just amazing how and where and why and what their intentions were.

"I wish we had that for every property we have listed.”

Under normal conditions, a property attracting as much interest as the Freestone Anglican Church would have been under contract and sold within a month.

But Mr Rickert said zoning issues complicated the transaction.

"It would have to be rezoned. It was zoned religious and not residential or commercial,” he said

As a matter of precaution, potential buyers had to run their plans by the Southern Downs Regional Council before committing dollars.

Mr Rickert is about to list the Yangan Anglican Church and said it would be another piece of hot property.

"We've had a lot of interest in that as well, without it even going to the market. We're just waiting for a boundary realignment,” he said.
