English player returns to Cowboys colours
RUGBY LEAGUE: Phil Economidis is upbeat about the start of the Warwick Cowboys Rugby League Club season.
"We are starting with the basics on skill and will progress to more advanced skills as the season progresses,” A-grade coach Economidis said.
"The club has had up to 60 at training but they haven't all been there on the same night. I am fine that not everyone is at every training session as they are not full-time footballers, some have work commitments and others are involved with cricket,” Economidis said.
"There is a fair bit of enthusiasm around the club. I am really happy with how things are going.”
Classy outside back Declan McLoughlin played for Warwick from 2013 to 2015 before returning home to England and is back with the Cowboys this season.
"I haven't seen him play but looking at him at training, I am sure he will be pushing for a starting position in A grade,” Economidis said.
"There will be some hotly contested spots in the backline.”
In the past month, the club has signed two players with Queensland Cup experience, Ben Sullivan and Dan Murphy. Long-time Norths Queensland Cup player Dylan Galloway has started his third season back in Warwick after joining Norths from the Warwick club when he was an under-18 player.
The Watson brothers, Dan and Mitch, are both vying for positions in A grade. For the past two seasons, Dan has played in the three quarters for Warwick in A grade and been the goal-kicker.
His younger brother Mitch has played in the past two under-18 grand finals and debuted on the wing in Cowboys A grade last season.
The first club games for the year are A and reserve-grade games against Aspley in Brisbane on February 24 and the Barrett Shield round against Wattles at Platz Oval, Clifton, on March 3.
The Cowboys are finalising three games against Kyogle in Warwick on March 10.
Players for all four grades welcome to training at 6pm each Tuesday and Thursday at Father Ranger Oval.
Under 18
AFTER two under-18 grand final appearances in two seasons, Matt Grew is confident going into his third season as coach.
"We have had 16 to 18 players at training for each session this year and I expect to end up with 23 players,” he said.
"The club has recruits who have come across from Collegians and Eastern Suburbs and love the chance to step up from junior into senior footy.
"There is a lot of competition for starting spots. The ones who get to training and perform well will start.”
