With power prices about to rise, Ergon offers help

WITH only a fortnight left before household electricity prices rise by more than 22%, struggling families have been reminded of relief programs run by Ergon Energy.

An Ergon spokesman said customers could split their bills up to be paid fortnightly, weekly or monthly, rather than having a big bill to pay every three months.

He said people on Centrelink payments could have their bills paid through the Centrepay program.

"The most important advice is that customers should telephone Ergon on 131 046 between 7am and 6.30pm on weekdays to discuss their options before an account becomes overdue," the spokesman said.

Ergon also has a Customer Assist Program to create an instalment plan for customers in financial difficulty.

The service also puts customers in touch with free financial counselling and monitors electricity consumption to suggest energy-saving tips.

The new electricity prices will come into effect from July 1.

They include a 22.6% increase to the general household tariff.

Businesses will also face electricity price increases from 13-17% depending on their tariff.

The prices are set by the Queensland Competition Authority for each financial year.
