Ergon sheds light on Allora power outage
A FAULT that left hundreds of local Ergon Energy customers unexpectedly without power late on Sunday night is unlikely to happen again following repairs.
A total of 634 homes between Maryvale and Allora were left without power between 9.44pm and 10.53pm on Sunday.
Ergon communications manager for the south-west region Rod Rehbein said the outage was caused by a high voltage fuse that had blown and required repairs.
He said there was no indication of what caused the fuse to blow, but suspected it was gradual damage to the fuse, not an uncommon occurrence with thousands of fuses across the 160,000 km network.
"The fuse needed to be replaced and once that was changed everything came back on," Mr Rehbein said.
"It's quite rare for it to happen repeatedly in one location unless there's significant storm damage, so it's likely something has just contributed to its deterioration over time and it just blew - after the football thankfully.
Despite the unplanned outage, Mr Rehbein said residents in south-west Queensland had enjoyed a good start to storm season.
He urged Southern Downs residents to be proactive in preparing their homes for summer storms.
"It's certainly the quietest start to storm season that I've seen in the last 10 years," he said.
"Coming into storm season we encourage people to remove anything that could turn into missiles in the wind and get caught in power lines and to be prepared to go without power for a few days if an outage is to occur."
