EDITORIAL: Fighting against Fatal Five this festive season

EVERYWHERE I turn lately, there seems to be another reminder how Christmas is only seven weeks away (I know - seven - can you believe it?).

Although I am never one to become fatigued by the Christmas countdowns, even if they are seemingly starting in July now, there is a dark side to the anticipation.

As the school year wraps up and holiday periods approach, people clamber into their vehicles on well earned and much needed breaks.

And as the number of people on the roads increases, so does the danger of becoming involved in a traffic crash.

Warwick police Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon has come out to urge people to take steps to reduce their risks of getting hurt or killed on the road this festive season.

Some of the big issues for drivers from our region appears to be mobile phone use and fatigue.

Motorists are being urged to put those phones down and take breaks when sleepiness kicks in on the road. Reckless driving not only endangers ourselves, but everyone else using the same stretch of road at that time.

Christmas holidays are arguably the most anticipated of the year and should be a time for making memories, not grieving loved ones or sitting beside hospital beds.

Let's all take an extra step in ensuring our trips all end with us returning home safely.
