Ex-Bronco joins the Cutters

A FORMER NRL player will play on Charlie Andrews Oval for the first time when the Goondiwindi Maroon side plays the Killarney Cutters at 2pm Saturday in round 1 of the Border Rugby League.

Nick Parfitt has joined the Cutters and was a try-scorer on his first day of footy for the club when Killarney won the round-robin a fortnight ago at Wallangarra.

He played NRL for the Broncos and was a record breaker with his try-scoring and goal kicking in the Queensland Cup.

His father Neil Parfitt is Cutters coach for a second season.

Of all the clubs, it appears Killarney has the most new players, including John Trindall who has played many seasons of top footy in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition with the Cowboys.

Many Killarney players who didn't play in the past couple of years have returned.

This Saturday will be the first time Goondiwindi teams have played in Border and will herald the return of the Tenterfield Tigers from Group 19.

Rep season

BRL selectors will meet after this weekend's round of fixtures to consider a team for the April 20 South West Trials in Miles.

League president Neil O'Connor said players in the Border team at Miles would have the chance to vie for future representative selections this season.

"We will play against teams from Roma and Charleville in Miles," he said.

A South West team will play Wide Bay on May 4-5 at Kingaroy and then Border players have the chance to make it to the Queensland Outback Muster Carnival in Hughenden on June 15-16 to vie for selection in the Outback team which may play an NRL curtain-raiser.

SATURDAY'S DRAW: Inglewood v Stanthorpe at Inglewood, Wallangarra v Texas at Wallangarra, Killarney v Goondiwindi Maroon at Killarney, Tenterfield v Goondiwindi Blue at Tenterfield.
