Experience tells the tale in Warwick hockey

HOCKEY: It was grand final experience which told the tale at Warwick Hockey Association premiership deciders at Queens Park on Saturday.

In the ladies grand final, Nat Webb scored for Saints after two minutes and the defending premiers were never headed on the way to a 3-2 victory.

Webb scored two goals and Kerri Fitch one. Captain Toni Cox did the lead-up work for two goals and Sian Hegarty set up Fitch.

Danielle Cook scored a field goal for Corinthians/Wyverns and Danica Schnitzerling one from a stroke.

It was the Saints eighth ladies premiership win in the past 11 seasons.

The start was different in the mens with Dion Phillips putting Wyverns up 1-0 after two minutes with a drag flick from a corner.

Wyverns held out defending premiers Corinthians until the second half.

Corinthians captain Jamie Ollerton led from the front with two goals, one known in hockey circles as a tomahawk, a backstick shot from 10 metres.

The match hotted up in the second half with three players off after receiving cards at one time, two from Corinthians and one from Wyverns.

Ollerton and his brother Jesse have played in eight grand finals for seven wins.

"This was the toughest,” Jamie said.

In junior grand finals, Zach Balfour scored the goal in a 1-0 Blue W1 win against Black while Yellow beat Green 3-0 in W2.
