Experienced new president for Warwick Combined Probus Club

A NEW era for Warwick Combined Probus Club has been ushered in, with former Southern Downs mayor Ron Bellingham taking over as president at the annual change-over luncheon.

Held at King Theatre, Mr Bellingham took the reins from outgoing president Dorothy Gartery.

Vice-president Bob Amos took care of proceedings with Mr Bellingham away on holidays.

The club, whose members number about 100, meets monthly and is designed for Warwick retirees.

Club welfare officer Fay Wickham said fun was the name of the game.

"We have a great time,” she said.

"It's a wonderful group of people and we organise events and activities at least once a month, to keep our members entertained.”

The annual change-over luncheon is a big deal according to Mrs Wickham.

"It's a very important day on our calendar,” she said.

"We gather to say thanks to the outgoing title-holders and welcome the new.

"We hold our events at the RSL, who are always accommodating and helpful.”

Performing at the luncheon was the Warwick Combined Probus Choir.

The choir meets fortnightly at choir conductor Jackie Butler's home to practice and organise themed tunes for each upcoming event.

"We sang a rang of Easter parade songs as well as a very moving tribute to Anzac Day,” Mrs Wickham said.

"Coming up we'll start looking toward Jumpers and Jazz and getting some jazzy numbers learnt.

"The choir is off to sing for the Homestead at Allora next week, it's very pleasing to see people smiling when we sing.”

The Warwick Probus Club is open to retirees from the local community who wish to connect and make friends with others of a similar age.

Mrs Wickham said it was a close-knit community.

"Everybody is thought of and cared for,” she said.

"If members are unwell we make sure they know they're in our minds with flowers or a card.”
