Extended trading limits family time
POTENTIAL plans to introduce seven-day trading to the Southern Downs have been poorly received by some retailers who say it would affect family time.
Owner of Clare's Hair Together and True Beauty, Clare Jeffries said she opposed the introduction of seven-day trading to Rose City Shoppingworld.
"They need family time," Mrs Jeffries said.
"Not having enough family time is creating a lot of problems in the world, in my opinion."
Owner of Warwick Watchmakers and Rose City Jewellers John Walsh said he too opposed changes to opening hours.
"I don't think it's really viable," Mr Walsh said.
"You've got to have the people to support it and the costs are horrific - the wages and the ongoing costs," he said.
Both retailers said extended night time and holiday trading hours could be a mixed bag.
"We have two late nights already," Mrs Jeffries said.
"I think if they (customers) really wanted something, they can find the time."
"Around Christmas time we have one Sunday that's good trading and another that's fairly ordinary," Mr Walsh said.
Opening the region to seven-day trading would give retailers an option to open on Sundays however Mrs Jeffries said it was likely many retailers would be made to open.
"I do think they'd (centre management) make most retailers open (if the centre decided to open then)," she said. "Costs will go up and, ultimately, will be passed on to clients."
Mr Walsh said there would be an adverse impact on family life for retailers forced to trade seven days a week.
"You've got to think about the people who've got to work it," he said. "It could bring in more people to Warwick but only to the detriment of another, smaller town."
