Faces of tragedy: Heartbreaking stories of 2018

YEAR on year the Sunshine Coast is rocked by stories of heartbreak, 2018 was no exception.

From youth suicide, workplace accidents, roadside deaths and overseas fatalities, the Coast community was hit hard.

Here are the stories that have us reeling.

January 28: Serena Stanley had the word at her feet, about to start her dream job at a horse stud in Victoria.

The much-loved Maleny teen and passionate equestrian rider was suddenly killed in a horse riding accident.

She was the happy, vibrant daughter of River and Sandy and loving sister to brothers Bradley and Jesse.

March 24: Pelican Waters man Kurt Butler was found dead in the waters off Bribie Island with a Canadian woman.

Mr Butler was remembered by loved ones as a "nice guy" and an "adored" father.

Unexplained injuries were found on the bodies which police said were from a "misadventure".

March 27: The death of a 17-year-old girl in an early morning car crash sent shockwaves through the township of Woombye and surrounding suburbs.

Despite frantic attempts at CPR by "admirable" passing motorists, the life of teenage Jade Dixson could not be saved.

Jade died on the way to hospital after the car she was travelling in crashed on Dulong Road, Perwillowen.

Her family were left heartbroken as were the Woombye Snakes Football fraternity where Jade played.

Jade's Legacy has since been established to encourage safe driver education for young drivers.

June 17: Arguably the Sunshine Coast's biggest tragedy of 2018 was the death of six-year-old girl Indie Armstrong who was accidentally run over in a shopping centre car park.

It left the Sunshine Coast community reeling and her family stricken with grief.

She was tragically killed when an 86-year-old woman lost control of her car and reversed into her.

Compounding the ordeal, the woman driving later died in hospital of a broken heart.

June 18: Mooloolaba's Benjamin Wright was on the trip of a lifetime in Europe when his sudden death shocked and saddened the Coast.

Ben Wright, 26, was travelling through Europe with two mates when he died. Now his family are desperate to bring his family back home.

The 26-year-old died in a Barcelona hospital on June 18 as a result of a congenital heart defect.

A Gofundme page has to be set up to help raise money just to get his body home, as the insurance only covered a fraction of the cost.

July 7: 22-year-old Mitch Sibraa left the Coast community shattered after he took his own life just 18 months after his brother Bailey was killed in a car crash.

His parents Steve and Amanda discovered their eldest son's body in their Sunshine Coast home, in front of Bailey's photo memorial and urn.

Hundreds gathered to mourn but also celebrate Mitch, who was remembered as a protector, a fixer and a loving man with an infectious smile.

September 22: A Brisbane child was killed in front of his father while playing on a homemade swing at an Airbnb in Witta.

Four-year-old Marco Seraji was sitting with four other children when it gave way on loose group and collapsed.

It saw a health and safety review conducted at the property.

September 27: Tim Cornthwaite was celebrating his last days as an unmarried man when disaster struck.

A freak accident during a bucks party prank left the popular father-of-two in a halo brace which had to be drilled into his skull, after he suffered multiple, unstable neck injuries.

The wider footballing community rallied in fundraiser for Tim who is thankfully out of the brace four months on.

October 15: 30-year-old Peregian man was killed in surf at Noosa National Park despite off-duty life guards and surfers helping him.

Three days later Noosa was rocked for the second time that week with a 60-year-old man being found unconscious at Main Beach.

In both instances, the life guards won praise for their attempts to revive both men.

November 5: The Queensland Cycling community was brought to its knees with the death of road safety advocate and Caloundra father Cameron Frewer.

Mr Frewer was riding on Caloundra Road when he was killed in the early hours of November 5.

He left behind his wife Catherine and three young children, but a lasting road safety campaign, Drive safe, Pass wide.

A 43-year-old Warana man has been charged and is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 14.

November 25: Jacob Mabb suffered a severe brain injury when he crashed a scooter while on holiday in Bali on November 25.

His critical injuries proved fatal and the immensely popular young man lost his life.

Thousands turned out to farewell the USC student and keen rugby player after he died on December 3.

Jacob lives on through selfless donations of his liver and both kidneys which have already saved three people.

December 8: Nikita Jo Walker was a passionate pilot living the dream.

She was killed in a solo flight in Tasmania's south west, reportedly in poor weather conditions.

She left behind friends and family and the aviation community reeling.
