Fairway skills for fairer sex
TRISH Roberts wasn't keen on her putting exploits going into a journalist's note book but the coaching of Rob McConnell was already paying off at a ladies' beginner clinic last week.
Roberts successfully putted four successive shots from 3m on the practise green as players braved a cold, windy day at the Warwick Golf Club.
She has played socially with family members in charity days but joined up for the beginner clinic to improve her play.
"It is definitely important to get out and play sport," Roberts said.
"I am here to improve. Before the beginners' clinics, I had two previous lessons with Rob."
Trish Bell has also signed up after playing a bit of social golf down the years.
"If you can play better, you enjoy it more," Bell said.
"I have given up hockey to play golf."
For both women, it is a chance to get away from their family businesses for a short time - the Jackie Howe Motel for Roberts and Bell's Butchery for Bell.
McConnell stressed the clinics were for players who had never played or those who wanted to improve.
Places are available at clinics for the remaining five weeks.
They will be held Tuesdays from 1-2.30pm and Saturdays 9-10.30am (from June 23).
