Families face off in hockey grand final

HOCKEY: Three mother-and-daughter combinations will play in the Warwick women's A-grade hockey grand final on Saturday.

Carly and Ayden Gillam and Shannon and Linsey Armbruster will play for Wyverns against a Saints side including Kerri and Bianca Fitch.

Carly and Kerri are the goalies and call themselves the jokesters of their respective teams.

Saints, the strongest team in the competition in recent years, is back in a grand final. Last year's winner Harlequins missed the final.

Carly has played in a winning ladies' team from Wyverns but has the chance on Saturday to be part of a winning team with daughter Ayden for the first time. Ayden is a fullback but does come up for some penalty corners and has also found the back of the net this season.

Bianca, who has 11 or 12 goals this season, first played hockey at the age of five and will play wing or fullback in the grand final. She and her mother have shared Saints premiership success.

The Armbrusters live at Stanthorpe and have made an impact in Wyverns club and representative hockey in recent years.

Shannon has been a prolific goal-scorer down the years but now plays fullback, while Linsey will play a half.

It is expected to be a close affair, with both teams having had a win and draw this season in games against each other.

Goalies Carly and Kerri were not looking forward to a potential shoot-out.

Neither has played in a shoot-out but it will happen if the scores are equal at full-time on Saturday. There is no provision for extra time in Warwick hockey finals.
