Family connection in short circuit title victories
MOTORSPORT: Warwick driver Jason O'Mara claimed the Short Circuit Motor Sport Association overall and under 2000cc class trophies at the association night of champions at the Drayton Bowls Club in Toowoomba.
He won in his Datsun 1200 coupe to finish with 176 points.
Second place outright went to promising young Pittsworth driver Zac Hudson in his Hyundai, who finished on 124 points. This was Hudson's first year in short circuit racing.
Jason's father Dan O'Mara, who has been competing in short circuit racing for 40 years, was presented with the trophy for third overall after securing 99 championship points in his Datsun 1200 coupe.
The super sprint series was one of the best for some time after the format of the classes changed.
The night was attended by competitors and their families from many parts of Queensland and New South Wales.
The dinner was supported by representatives from the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, Laurence Svenson and his wife Janelle. Laurence is the Queensland delegate on the CAMS board.
CAMS Queensland administration officer Lisa Catchpole and Svenson presented the trophies.
The Queensland/New South Wales Sprint Challenge was run over four rounds, three rounds at Warwick's Morgan Park and one round at Stanthorpe's Carnell Raceway.
Short circuit association representative Fred Berge said the challenge was very hotly contested and attracted near record fields.
"This produced some close racing throughout the four rounds, with New South Wales winning narrowly. The series is run in two sections, short circuit racing and super sprints,” he said.
