Family on long road to Nationals

FOR Jane Cooper, it was a matter of packing five suitcases, five horses and trekking for five days across the country from Western Australia for the Barastoc Polocrosse Nationals.

Mrs Cooper and her husband Trent are competing in the men's and women's divisions and daughters Ashley, 6, and Mackenzie, 18 months, came along for the ride.

A friend of the family, Phillip Chalcraft, lives in Zambia and loves the sport so much, he flew over just to travel with the Coopers and help out with their horses at the competition.

Mrs Cooper said she loved that the sport could involve her whole family.

"The kids don't play yet, but Ash is obsessed and Mackenzie already loves it," she said.

"They carry their sticks around everywhere."

Mrs Cooper's grandparents were among the founding members of polocrosse in WA, and passed down their love for the sport for generations.

Ashley said although she loved to watch her mum and dad play, the Nationals were more of a social event for her.

"I mostly play with my friends," she said.
