Family ready for polocrosse fun
POLOCROSSE: Five members of the Waugh family will be in action this weekend at the annual Cunningham carnival.
Warwick builder Allan Waugh first played for the Warwick club and represented Australia in Test series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. He played six Tests, including two as vice-captain and is one of six family members from three generations to play the game.
The Waugh clan first joined Cunningham a decade ago before Allan and son Todd, played for NSW club Macksville.
"We had mates at Macksville and they asked us to play at a time we were doing a lot of work on the mid north coast of New South Wales," Allan said.
Allan's wife Carmel continued to play with Cunningham at a time Macksville played in many Queensland carnivals. Daughters Ella and Ryle started to press their claims for state teams playing for Cunningham where all the family now play.
Todd, Ella and Ryle will play in the Cunningham 1 mixed team this weekend; Allan will play on a young horse in the lower grades and Todd's daughter Kayleigh in sub juniors.
Carmel played 10 seasons for Cunningham, including in one carnival team with her husband and three children.
"While five of the family will be in action this weekend, Carmel, Todd's wife Quintina and younger son Will will watch.
"Will is aged three and our halftime man with the oranges," Allan said.
The head of the clan attributes a lot of the family success in polocrosse to Carmel.
"She is a great organiser and keeps all happy," he said.
"We have our own breed of horses by our stallion Linmack which makes it more fun," he said.
Daughter Ryle has played intermediate polocrosse for Australia after winning a best rider and best horse award at the 2012 nationals.
Ella is keen to play for Australia and is in the state mixed side to play in the nationals in Darwin in July.
Allan admitted that Todd was fairly casual about his polocrosse career.
"Further down the track, he may aim for representative polocrosse," he said.
The Waugh sisters, Sophie Forster, Dougal Strahley and Anthony O'Leary are the Cunningham players in state teams for the nationals.
