Famous players at head of under-16s

IT WAS a battle between two Warwick Cowboys A-grade premiership players when Collegians and Eastern Suburbs played in the under-16 trial game at Collegians Oval.

Collegians won 48-20 on Friday night against a Suburbs team which is re-building after last year's runaway grand-final victory against Goondiwindi.

The Collegians side is coached by 1987 Cowboys hooker George McVeigh and team fullback Noel Loudon is at the helm of the Suburbs U16 side this season.

The inaugural 1987 A-grade premiership was secured in the Cowboys second season in the Toowoomba competition.

Collegians president Glen Williamson said all teams from both clubs played really well on both Friday night and then at Suburbs Oval on Saturday afternoon.

"The under-14 game was a tough contest and both teams look like they will figure in the top four," he said.

"Our club has registered 171 players which was similar to last year's club record.

"We could end up topping the record and have enough players for all grades except under 14s. More welcome at U14s training at 5pm Tuesday and Thursday at Cowboys."

Suburbs president Garry McEwan said the Friday night footy for the older age groups was a great night put on by Collegiuans.

"There was a lot of good footy, they were good trial games," he said.

"We have five under-12 girls playing this season and would love to attract some more girls and more players especially in the U7, U10 and U14 age groups at Suburbs.

Interested players welcome to call McEwan on 0416 513120 or come to training each Tuesday and Thursday at Suburbs Oval at 4.30pm.

The Warwick and District Junior Rugby League competition will start on March 28 with Collegians at home to Wattles, Eastern Suburbs travelling to Stanthorpe and Millwood hosting Goondiwindi at the McIntyre Sports Complex at Inglewood. Border Bears have the bye in round 1.

Girls can play with the boys up to and including the U12 grade.
